Esko flexo customers nab four of six Best of Show FTA
Excellence in Flexography honours
E
sko has announced that four of the six Best of
Show winners at this year’s 2014 FTA Excel-
lence in Flexography Awards used plates from
Esko CDI digital flexo imagers. In addition, more
than 70 percent of all winning entries were submit-
ted by companies who are customers of Esko soft-
ware or CDI’s.
FTA’s annual Excellence in Flexography Awards
competition regularly showcases the best print
work from an industry that is thriving, continually
evolving and always in-tune with innovation. Each
year, teams of judges evaluate an assortment of la-
bels, pouches, shrink sleeves, folding cartons, cor-
rugated boxes, linerboard containers, envelopes,
napkins, balloons, cups, plates and flexibles to
determine which takes home a gold, silver, bronze
or the coveted Best of Show designation. Print sam-
ples are evaluated for high-quality graphics, tight
registrations, extensive tonal ranges, color that is
crisp, and type that is solid, just to name a few
judging considerations.
‘It’s very rewarding to see many winning entries
using plates imaged on an ESKO CDI and receiv-
ing Best of Shows for a variety of categories—from
corrugated to labels. It shows that our imaging de-
vices can be used successfully in virtually any facil-
ity that requires high quality flexo,’ explained Ian
Hole, Esko VP, Market Development. ‘Also, many of
the entries used our HD Flexo or Full HD Flexo imag-
ing technology, extending printable dots as well as
expanding the printable gamut.’
The four Best of Show Entrants who used plates
imaged from Esko CDIs included:
• Marvaco Oy Ltd. (Finland), who entered and
won the Best of Show award with its Falcon BBQ
Wrapper in the category of Mid Web, using Full HD
Flexo;
• RockTenn, (Jacksonville, FL) who received its
Best of Show award in the category of Preprinted
Linerboard for its entry, Hartz Multi Cat Litter;
• Cellotape-Landmark, (Fremont, CA) who re-
ceived a Best of Show for its Narrow Web entry
with Ron Teeguarden’s Dragon Herbs Tonic Alchemy
Label;
• Lewisburg Container Co., (Lewisburg, OH)
whose Boulevard Brewing Co. Pale Ale Box re-
ceived a Best of Show for Combined Corrugated.
‘On behalf of Esko, I want to congratulate those
who were successful at the 2014 FTA Excellence in
Flexography Awards. Esko is proud of the solutions
we offer to our customers. We also understand that
it takes a dedicated and knowledgeable staff to get
the most out of any prepress and press software
and equipment. We are proud to play a part in their
successes,’ commented Tony Wiley, President,
Esko North America. ‘We commend everyone’s ef-
forts. Their clients must be proud of the work they
produced. In the year ahead, we hope that our cus-
tomers find even more novel ways to demonstrate
the excellence of their work. We’ll be there to help
them.’
W
ith a comprehensive offer of information on
technologies, research, and industrial use of
additive manufacturing, the new web portal
went online on Thursday, 8May.
On 28May, the Associationwas constituted at a pub-
lic convention in the VDMA’s headquarters in Frankfurt,
and elected its first executive board consecutively. Rainer
Gebhardt, the VDMA’s project manager, welcomed be-
tween 40 and 50 founding members, among whomwere
manufacturers of industrial 3D printing machines as well
as their suppliers, material manufacturers, providers of
engineering design services and finishers, as well as us-
ers from such diverse sectors of mechanical engineering
and machinery manufacturers as robotics and packaging
engineering. In addition, researchers from universities
and research institutes have announced themselves.
‘The whole process chain was represented,’ Gebhardt
explained.
Beyond this, the newweb portal also offers informed
insight into all sectors of the process chain. Contents in
German and English are geared to experts aswell as non-
professionals. They offer orientation for the bandwidth of
metal and plastics processing with additive manufactur-
ing, and they show latest trends from research and indus-
trial practice with texts, pictures, and videos. ‘Our web
portal is a vital component of informal networking for all
the process chain’s players,’ Gebhardt stated, and that it
will publicise the international Association’s activities, as
well as exhibit the range of additive manufacturing. In fu-
ture, it will growwith the know-howand themembership
numbers of the Association.
