Are Antimicrobial Coatings the next big thing in print?
S
afe to Touch Print is capable of reducing harmful
infection on printed surfaces by up to a staggering
99.999 percent - ideal for all printed products es-
pecially ones used within the medical sector, which has
been struggling to contain the rise of antibiotic-resistance
organisms like MRSA plus magazines, banknotes, food
packaging and pharmaceutical packaging.
Although millions of tonnes of printed matter is pro-
duced every year virtually none of it is protected. This has
been largely due to the previously available products on
the market being expensive, having low safety profiles
and poor efficacy.
Chemical Intelligence has now developed a commer-
cially viable, safe and highly effective solution
Safe to Touch print kills organisms such as:
Campylobacter coli, Campylobacter, MRSA, Ecoli, En-
terobacter cloacae, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumo-
niae, Lactobacillus casei, Listeria monocytogenes, Pseu-
domonas aeruginosa, Salmonella, Salmonella enteritidis,
Staphylococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus
epidermidis, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Streptococ-
cus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyo-
genes, Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus sanguis,
Streptococcus sobrinus plus many more…….
‘The results of independent testing confirm that Safe
to Touch Print, has impressive killing activity against bac-
teria. This indicates its potential as a means of reducing
the transmission of infections via printed materials such
as food packaging,’ said Professor Richard James, Profes-
sor of Microbiology & Director of the Centre for Health-
care Associated Infections, University of Nottingham.
Safe to Touch Print has shown amazing results dur-
ing both laboratory and press-room testing and we are
certain that offering this technology in a finished, ready-
to-use product line, will inspire printing in a diverse range
of applications ensuring higher levels of protection for
people exposed to harmful infections.

New standby function on Heidelberg sheetfed presses boosts efficiency
A
ll presses from Heidelberg that are equipped with
the Prinect Press Center now come with the new
standby function. This enables the press to be
switched to an energy-saving mode that significantly
reduces carbon-dioxide emissions. Depending on press
length and format, the standby function leads to poten-
tial savings of up to 15kW. Calculated over an entire year,
print shops that switch to standby mode for just one hour
each day can thus save enough energy to power a family
home.
Day-to-day press operation involves repeated waits
and pauses. Depending on the situation, operators can
decide whether they wish to switch to standby mode.
This is a simple step that does not involve powering down
the press. Pressing the standby button on the Prinect
Press Center switches the peripherals and individual sub-
assemblies of the press to energy-savingmode. Powering
up the press again is alsomuch faster than starting it from
scratch.
Druckerei Kern GmbH in Bexbach is one of the first
print shops to benefit from the green, cost-efficient opera-
tion made possible by the new standby function. ‘We’ve
nowbeen using the standby function on our Speedmaster
CX 102-5+L for several weeks. Evenwith idle times of just
a few minutes, we can place the entire press - including
water treatment, dryer units, and wallscreen - in standby
mode,’explainedUweKuhn,ateamleaderinKern’sPress
Department. ‘The one-click operation is simple and intui-
tive, and it’s also extremely easy to start the press operat-
ing again. The standby function is an ingeniously simple
solution for further boosting energy efficiency,’ he added.
The ‘Kern goes green’ campaign demonstrates the
company’s commitment to sustainable production. Oper-
ating on a production area of over 2600 square metres,
it offers short-run digital printing, large-format printing,
and high-quality long-run offset printing. Heidelberg tech-
nology helps reduce resource consumption. The highly
automated Speedmaster CX 102 five-colour press with
coating unit and Speedmaster SX 102 eight-colour ma-
chine shorten makeready times significantly. In conjunc-
tion with Prinect Inpress Control, which controls ink and
register on the fly, the amount of paper waste has been
almost halved.
The company’s certifications include the ISO 9001
qualitymanagement standard and the EMAS III European
environmental standard. ‘One of our corporate principles
is to ensure green working practices and we’re delighted
that, in Heidelberg, we’ve found an expert partner to help
us in this respect,’ explained Kuhn.
Uwe Kuhn, a team leader in Druckerei Kern’s Press
Department, switches the Speedmaster CX 102 from
standbymode back to normal operation simply by
pressing a button on the Prinect Press Center.
