The
T
he relationship between Papersmith & Son
and Joint Aid Management South Africa (JAM
SA) dates back to 2009 and is stronger than
ever! Papersmith recently handed over another
cheque to the value of R22 000 to the organisation,
bringing the total value of the partnership so far to
almost R90 000.
Poverty is a sad reality for many South African
households. Recent studies illustrate that almost
56 percent of children in South Africa live below
the poverty line. Moreover, more than half of South
Africa’s population does not have regular access to
enough food and our national food security is esti-
mated to be 45.6 percent.
Joint Aid Management (JAM) International, a
South African founded international humanitarian
relief and development organisation firmly believes
in ‘Helping Africa Help Itself’. Such a vision is real-
ised through our programmes, which focus on Food
Security, Nutritional Intervention, Vulnerable Child
Care, Skills Development and Agricultural Devel-
opment. JAM operates in five countries in Africa:
South Africa, Angola, Mozambique, Rwanda and
South Sudan.
JAM SA’s Nutritional Feeding programme is
complemented by its Early Childhood Development
(ECD) centre makeover programme, which helps
ECD centres provide children with quality educa-
tion.
Kofi Annan once said, ‘A society that cuts off
from its youth severs its lifeline.’ We at JAM SA
feed over 44 000 school going children in over 1000
Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in four
provinces in South Africa.
This milestone would not have been achieved
without the support from our donors. Through our
programmes, working with partners with the sup-
port of donors, we do our part in investing in South
Africa’s future; her children.
With every procured ton of Stephen paper, Pa-
persmith & Son (Pty) Ltd donates R2000 towards
JAM’s feeding programme. It costs R30 to feed a
child for a month, and R360 to feed a child for an
entire year. In total Papersmith & Son’s donations
thus far have fed a total of 246 children in JAM
SA supported ECD centres with their nutritious por-
ridge.
JAM provides 50 grams of fortified porridge mix
to feed just over 44 000 children in ECD centres in
South Africa. This porridge provides at least 75 per-
cent of a child’s daily micro-nutrient requirements.
Filled with this highly nutritious porridge, JAM’s
signature Red Bowl represents hope to these chil-
dren by contributing to their nourished bodies and
minds.
Their feeding programmes allow us to help im-
prove the physical and mental well-being of each
of these children, while promoting and enhancing
their education by encouraging enrolment, reten-
tion and regular attendance.

2014 PPI Awards finalists announced
R
ISI, the leading information provider for the
global forest products industry, has announced
the list of 2014 PPI Awards finalists.
The 2014 PPI Awards program honours leader-
ship, vision, innovation and strategic accomplish-
ments within the pulp and paper industry. The
Awards are the only global honours dedicated to
recognising the achievements of companies, mills

With over 160 entries for 14 categories, 2014
was a great year for entries- demonstrating the in-
novative nature of the industry and the enthusiasm
of the teams and individuals who work in the pulp
and paper sector.
Mark Rushton, editor of
Pulp & Paper Interna-
tional
, said, ‘The PPI Awards have very clearly come
of age and the competition is now seen by pulp and
paper producers globally as a fantastic event to be
associated with. Yet again this year the standard of
entries overall has been very impressive and judg-
ing has been difficult because of the high quality
seen this year. Thanks to all the judges for their
hard work on the numerous entries.’
