T
he GAPP Magazine, as you all know, is all about bringing you the news,
trends, developments and happenings of the broader printing industry
in South Africa. Much of what happens in this market is dictated by
developments which have already taken place or trends which are
underway in the markets of Europe and The United States. There is very
little that an industry the size of ours here in South Africa can do to influence
international trends.
The local market, however, does march to the sound of its own drum and while
our activity will not influence international trends we do set our own pace. This
became evident at the recent Fespa Africa show which took place at Gallagher
Estate. Many of the leading suppliers to the industry showed and demonstrated
the latest equipment and technology available on the local market. Some even
recorded firsts outside of their home markets.
As an industry mouthpiece, The GAPP must report on these developments,
however, sometimes words and pictures just aren’t enough. It is necessary,
occasionally, to physically show a particular ef fect. It could be argued that this
can be done with an insert, but that may not carry the required weight. The
cover of this issue of the magazine features Dimensional Printing from Kodak.
It was printed on the Kodak NexPress SX on the Antalis stand at Fespa Africa.
The result is a subtle, but emphatic, textured printing ef fect. While setting up the
dimensional print is not a simple process, the final ef fect is something unusual.
Touch the outside cover and the inside back cover to experience the ef fect.
There are a number of interesting articles in this issue. The feature from Jo Lloyd
should be of particular importance and relevance. At a time when the printing
industry is looking for any piece of good news, this article presents a shining
glimmer of hope.
Staying with the concept of hope, we are proud to present some additional,
and more concrete, information on The GAPP Awards. This printing competition
being launched by Sentient Publishing will of fer the local printing industry, in all
its facets, a means of competing on a friendly level, to establish a bench mark
for quality. With the slogan ‘The Pinnacle of Excellence’, The GAPP Awards will
of ficially be launched by the end of September.
So, contrary to the feeling and general mood of the printing industry, there is
plenty of positivity to be found, if you just look. I urge all of you to look hard, if we
change our attitudes we can change our circumstances. Good luck and send
us your inspirational stories for our year-end issue.
Till next time
